Description

This is a stunning example of Western American folk art, a substantial wood relief plaque depicting an ox-drawn covered wagon, a classic image of the American frontier. The piece is one of four carved wall plaques up for auction, each measuring 20″ by 21″, created in 1947 by the famed Western folk artist Dee Flagg (1922-1999). Flagg, a celebrated woodcarver from Scottsdale, began his 70-year career using only hand tools, earning numerous awards, including Best in Show at the world’s largest woodcarver’s exhibition in Toronto. His work is held in prominent collections, notably those of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. This plaque is clearly signed “DEE” on the front and explicitly dated “DEE ’47” on the reverse. The material is a thick, richly-grained hardwood plywood, finished with a warm stain and subtle coloring on the oxen and foliage. The condition is very good for its age, showing a desirable patina and minor surface wear consistent with nearly 80 years of display, with no significant damage to the carved scene. H 20″, W 21″, D 1.5″.
