Description

This is a fantastic piece of mid-20th century Western folk art: a large, deeply-carved wall plaque by the renowned Scottsdale, Arizona artist Dee Flagg (1922-1999). Flagg was famous for his intricate, hand-carved Old West scenes, a passion he pursued from age five. This particular work, depicting a cowboy or cavalry rider on a dramatically galloping horse amidst rough terrain, is signed “DEE” on the face. Flagg’s work is prominently featured in prestigious collections, including the Gene Autry and Roy Rogers Western museums. Crafted from a thick piece of hardwood, likely oak, the plaque features the artist’s signature high-relief, textured style and is finished in a rich, dark patina. The Plaque is in very good antique condition commensurate with its age, showing a rich, appealing patina. Visible imperfections include minor surface wear, a few light scratches, and general age-related oxidation of the finish, but no major chips or breaks are apparent in the carving itself. The reverse shows the original backing, a metal hook for hanging. H 12″, W 15″, D 1.5″
