Description

Remington Rolling Block Rifle. This classic single-shot, breech-loading rifle was produced from the mid-1860s into the early 20th century. Along with the Sharps rifle, the Rolling Block was one of two rifles probably used more than any other by the buffalo hunters who hunted the American bison herds in the 1870s and 1880s. This particular rifle displays the manufacturer and patent information “REMINGTON ARMS COMPANY ILION, N.Y. / PAT. MAY 30 1864 MAY 7th JUNE 11th NOV 12th DEC 24Th 1872 / DEC 31st 1872 SEPT 9th 1873 . JAN 12th MARCH 18th 1874” on the upper tang. The rifle features a 30-inch round, .32 caliber rifled barrel. The top of the barrel displays the markings “7M-M.S.M”. The two-piece, walnut stock shows wear, nicks, and chips from use and storage, but overall solid with no cracks. The overall gun is 45.5-inches in length. The bore shows oxidation, and the rifling is overall good with prominent grooves. The metal exhibits remnants of its original factory finish with wear and oxidation. The metal butt plate shows pitting and oxidation. The action moves smoothly and is tight. From Donley’s Wild West Town Museum.
