Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1317:
Description
“American Automatic” double-action, top-break revolver.
Often called a ‘Suicide Special’ or ‘Pocket Pistol’, these revolvers were manufactured in the late 19th or early 20th century. While marked “AMERICAN AUTOMATIC” on the barrel, it is decidedly a revolver, and refers to the revolver’s automatic cartridge ejection feature. This revolver features a 3 ½-inch, .38 caliber barrel, with a 5-round cylinder. The top of the barrel is marked with “AMERICAN AUTOMATIC” and the caliber designation “38” is inscribed on the left side of the frame. The frame and barrel have a silver, case-hardened finish and shows oxidation and handling marks. The wooden grips show significant wear, scuffing, and finish loss, with a split on the right-side grip. The bore is clean, and the rifling groves are prominent. The action and trigger are smooth and tight. The overall length of the revolver is 7.5″. No serial number is present.
