Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1498:
Description
This striking black and white historical photograph depicts a massive, pyramidal pile of American bison (buffalo) skulls, a chilling testament to the scale of the buffalo slaughter that took place in the late 19th century on the Great Plains. The image, likely a reprint of a famous historical photograph, captures two men standing on the pile, emphasizing its enormous size. This grim subject matter has become an iconic, albeit disturbing, visual representation of a pivotal and destructive era in American history. The image is mounted in a simple, contemporary black frame behind glass. The print appears to be in very good condition with no visible creases or tears, though there is a small light spot or reflection near the top right corner. The modern frame shows minimal wear. H 11″, W 14″, D 0.75″. From the Western display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
