Description

This is a phenomenal example of a late 19th to early 20th-century American or European portable cast iron strong box or document safe, often referred to as a “treasure chest” or fire safe. Constructed entirely of heavy-gauge cast iron, it features a thick, hinged lid and is finished in a deep, oxidized maroon or rust-red paint. The front face is decorated with an ornate, stylized floral or scrollwork design surrounding a robust cast iron carrying handle, a common feature on early fireproof boxes. The construction is riveted and bolted, emphasizing security and durability over aesthetics, indicative of a piece meant for secure transport or storage of valuables, cash, or important papers. This particular example exhibits heavy surface wear, extensive paint loss, and rusting consistent with age and long-term use, especially on the top surface where a faint, white pattern or label residue is visible. The interior is unlined and shows similar wear and rust-red coloring. The heavy-duty hinges are intact, and the simple hasp locking mechanism appears functional, though no key or padlock is included. This style of iron box is highly collectible for its rugged industrial look and historical function. Weighs 47lbs. H 7.5″, W 13″, D 9″
