Description

This is a well-preserved example of a vintage “Special Deputy Sheriff” badge, likely dating from the mid-20th century, identifiable by the distinctive American bald eagle crest and the central Great Seal of the State of New York. The two-tone finish—a silver-colored metal for the main body and an applied gold-colored finish, or possibly brass, for the central New York State Seal and the SHERIFF banner—is characteristic of badges from makers like Blackinton, V.H. Blackinton & Co., or possibly New York’s own S. Obermeyer Co., though no maker’s mark is visible in the images. The seal features the two figures of Liberty and Justice supporting the shield. The “Special Deputy” designation indicates the wearer had temporary or limited law enforcement authority, often used for specific events or security details. The material appears to be a nickel or silver-plated base metal with brass elements. The overall condition is good, exhibiting an attractive aged patina, tarnish, and wear consistent with use and age, particularly the loss of some finish on the eagle’s wings and the brass pin attachment on the reverse. The original clasping pin mechanism remains intact and functional. H 2.5″, W 1.75″. From the Western display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
