Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1484:
Description
Nice example of an early 20th-century American law enforcement badge, likely from a county or small municipality, given the designation “CONSTABLE” surrounding the central five-point star cut-out. The shield-style badge has a decorative scalloped or lobed border, which was a very popular style in the 1900s through the 1940s. It appears to be constructed of a stamped base metal, possibly nickel-plated brass or pot metal, and shows a distinctive, pleasing patina from age and use. The construction of the reverse side, featuring a simple but functional safety-style pin attachment with a separate catch, is characteristic of badges produced by numerous regional manufacturers during this era. Condition is good for its age; the face shows surface wear, minor scratching, and rubbing that has slightly dulled the finish, typical of a piece worn in the line of duty. The reverse side shows significant tarnishing and areas where the silver-tone plating has worn away, revealing a darker base metal underneath. The pin mechanism appears intact and functional. H 2″, W 1.75″. From the Western display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
