Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1483:
Description
This is a fantastic piece of early American law enforcement memorabilia: a five-point star badge for a Deputy Sheriff of Cook Co. (presumably Cook County, Illinois, home to Chicago). The simplicity of the design and the embossed lettering suggest a period style, likely mid-20th century or earlier, though dating without a maker’s mark is challenging. The badge is constructed of a brass or nickel-silver alloy and features a simple but sturdy vertical pin-back clasp mechanism, which is characteristic of older badges. The front has a pleasing, aged patina. Condition-wise, the badge exhibits significant wear consistent with use and age, including numerous surface scratches, dings on the edges, and an overall dulling of the finish. The reverse shows heavier tarnish, green oxidation in areas, and what appears to be a residual adhesive or mounting mark covering a large portion of the metal. The pin mechanism appears intact and functional. Based on the measurements provided by the user, the dimensions are estimated as: H 2.5″, W 2.5″, D 0.25″. From the Western display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
