Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1433:
Description
This is a remarkable piece of early American penal history, an authentic cast iron ball and chain with a shackle. This mid-19th to early 20th century heavy iron ball clearly displays the embossed marking, “2 ½”. Connect to the ball is a cast iron chain which ends with a large leg shackle or ankle cuff. These devices were used to restrain prisoners during work details to ensure that the convict would not wander off too far. The condition is good antique condition, showing rust, pitting, and oxidation expected from decades of exposure and use. The surfaces are dark, rough, and deeply textured, lending great character to the piece. This piece is heavy, weighing over 50lbs. Ball: Dia. 6.5, H 12” / Chain: L 40” / Shackle: H 4″, W 5.75”
