Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1263:
Description
A fine example of a Mission/Arts & Crafts style bed frame, likely dating from the early 20th century (circa 1900-1920s). The robust, rectilinear form, flat-paneled design, and visible through-tenons (peeking out at the posts) are classic hallmarks of the style popularized by Gustav Stickley. The wood appears to be Quarter-sawn White Oak, prized for its beautiful tiger-stripe medullary ray figuring, though the deep, dark stain—typical of the period’s Fumed or Ebonized oak—obscures some of the grain detail. Included are the headboard, footboard (which appears shorter than the headboard, a common configuration), the two side rails, and a bundle of eleven modern lumber slats wrapped in plastic, intended for the mattress support. The condition appears to be good vintage, with the deep finish largely intact but showing expected wear, patina, and some fading/discoloration on the posts and rails consistent with a century of use and being disassembled/stored. The lighter finish on the footboard posts suggests either exposure to sunlight or a difference in original finishing. H 54″, W 61″, D 75″
