Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1254:
Description
A quintessential piece of American Arts and Crafts furniture, an Oak Slant-Front Desk or Secretary, positively identified by the clear mark as a product of Limbert’s Arts & Crafts, Grand Rapids and Holland. Limbert pieces, particularly those in the quartersawn oak seen here with its strong ray-fleck figuring, are highly sought after by collectors for their clean lines and solid construction, embodying the honest, utilitarian aesthetic of the era. The desk features a drop-down writing surface supported by a folding hinge mechanism, revealing an interior fitted with pigeonholes and a single shallow drawer. Below the main slant front is a long, locking drawer with an attractive, hammered brass or bronze Arts and Crafts style pull and keyhole escutcheon (key included), and two lower cabinet doors opening to a storage compartment (visible in the open view). The construction is typical of the period, featuring sturdy post-and-slat sides. Condition Assessment: The overall condition is good vintage, commensurate with age and regular use. There are visible scratches, scuffs, and areas of finish wear, particularly on the interior shelf and writing surface, which add to the piece’s patina. The wood grain shows a nice, deep color. The brass hardware appears original and aged. The hinge mechanism for the writing surface is present and appears functional. H 43″, W 32.5″, D 16″
