Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1221:
Description
Striking pair of contemporary Native American style ceremonial dance rattles, likely from the Plains or Southwest. The first rattle is in the shape of a human hand, crafted from dyed blue and stitched leather or rawhide, with natural horsehair extensions hanging from the fingertips. Its handle is wrapped in beaded textile in a geometric red, black, and white pattern over a leather-wrapped grip. The second rattle is shaped like a turtle or bear paw and is also made of stuffed leather, featuring vibrant hand-painted designs including a blue and black bison/buffalo skull motif. It is attached to a simple wooden handle adorned with leather strips, feathers, and minimal beadwork. Both rattles display an attractive, handcrafted aesthetic with a focus on traditional materials. Condition appears to be Excellent to Near Mint; the leather is supple with a natural patina and there are no discernible tears, heavy scuffs, or significant paint loss on the decorated rattle. Included tanned hide. Hand rattle, approximately 14” long and with hair extensions 24” long; animal rattle 17.5” long. Both rattles approximately 5” wide by 2” to 3” deep. From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
