Description

Sioux Catlinite Pipe/Porcupine Quill Horsehair Drop
Large Sioux Catlinite pipe with flat wooden stem adorned with dyed horsehair, woven porcupine quill and feathers. The pipe is a simple design, with rings on the ends and carved décor mimicking sinew hafting. The flat wooden stem plain, until you reach the final third mouthpiece end. Woven porcupine quills are wrapped around a 6” length of the stem. Sinew thread binds a cut short, and long red dyed horse hair plume approximately 21 inches in length. Just before the mouthpiece is a cluster of black and green bird feathers. Good condition. Two repaired breaks, one at the base of the vertical bowl, and the other just before the vertical ascent. Scuffs on bowl commensurate with age and use. Some loss to the woven porcupine quills on the wrap. Purple coloration present as well. Dimensions: 32.5” long x 1.5” wide overall. Pipe: 4.75” tall x 8.5” long. Stem 24” long. A brass wire runs through the pipe from mouthpiece to the bowl for mounting vertical on a wall. See photos.
