Description

An exceptional example of traditional Native American basketry, this lidded round basket is intricately woven from dark, natural fibers. Its most notable feature is the applied three-dimensional “spikes” covering both the body and the lid, a technique reminiscent of porcupine quillwork traditions. This fine piece likely originates from the Great Lakes or Woodland regions with attributions to the Ojibwe peoples Upper Michigan circa 1920 (based on paper tag affixed), but possibly Winnebago as well. Condition is good, with minimal loss of weave. Dimensions: 5.5” diameter x 3.5” tall. See photos.
