Description
This is a Northern Cheyenne umbilical cord fetish, circa 1890s. Crafted from tanned hide and adorned with intricate bead and quillwork. The fetish is turtle shaped, a common motif in Native American cultures representing longevity and protection. The turtles’ carapace is covered in concentric rings red and yellow dyed quills. It is surrounded by glass trade seed beads, primarily in dark blue with white beads. Its limbs are also beaded. Leather tie at top for attachment. Overall in good, complete condition.
