October Fall Classic
Lot 1246b:
Description
This is a phenomenal piece of Mid-Century Modern architectural salvage, likely intended as a decorative fireplace screen or a large transom window insert, given its substantial size and semicircular, fan-like form. Created by Barrington, IL architect Fred Schurect (1915-1982). The design is a geometric mosaic, composed of various shapes—rectangles, squares, and circles—of deeply saturated colored glass embedded into a thick, coarse gray cementitious matrix. The colors predominantly feature rich navy blues, sapphire blues, and dark ambers/browns, typical of the era’s brutalist-adjacent aesthetic where texture and material were key. The pattern radiates outward from a central vertical axis, lending it a striking, almost cosmic-ray appearance. It speaks to the post-war trend of integrating art into everyday functional objects. The visible condition appears good overall, with the embedded glass pieces intact; however, there are small areas of wear and minor cement chipping consistent with its age and use as a heavy, exposed element. The back would need to be inspected for mounting hardware or damage. H 32″, W 51″, D 1.25″
