Description

A magnificent lot of three antique Boyce Moto-Meter radiator cap temperature gauges, iconic automotive accessories from the 1920s-1930s. The lot includes a “Universal Model” on a brass “dogbone” style cap and a striking winged Moto-Meter, both mounted on heavy, rusted metal blocks for display, as well as a third unmounted “Universal” model. The Moto-Meters themselves feature a glass-covered dial with a thermometer that registered the engine’s water temperature, visible to the driver over the hood. The dials are marked with temperature zones like “SUMMER,” “AVERAGE,” “COOL,” and “DANGER,” along with warnings like “COOL MOTOR CAUSES GASOLINE WASTED” and “STOP AND INVESTIGATE ANY SUDDEN RISE OF TEMPERATURE.” They are manufactured by The Moto-Meter Co., Inc., Long Island City, N.Y., as visible on the dials. This set showcases the classic functional design and various cap styles of the era. Condition is consistent with age and use on a vintage vehicle; all pieces show heavy patina, tarnish, surface rust on the display blocks, scratches to the metal casings, and some discoloration/fading to the dial faces. Universal: 5.5″ tall, 3.5″ diameter. Dogbone on heavy block base: 6″ wide, 7″ tall, 3″deep. Winged on heavy base: 9″ wide, 7.25″ tall, 3″ deep. See photos.
