1) Selection of four original Cartes de visite. Three of them are attributed to 5th Kansas Cavalry, Union Army, fourth is blank. One taken by T.W. Bankes, has an ink signature that needs further research. Name written in pencil above Thomas W. Scudder is different from his known later signature. Each measure standard 2-1/2″ x 4″. 2) Six books: A) “Life and Death in Rebel Prisons” By Robert H. Kellogg. 1865. Owned by “B.B. Courtright” SGT Courtright served in the 13th Regiment, Illinois Infantry, Company E [as listed on www.nps.gov/civilwar/index.htm] ; B) “The Soldier’s Child” 1860. Inscribed to William J. S_naugle, Co C Engineer Regiment, ___ St. Louis, MO.”; C) “The Works of the Late Edgar Allen Poe. VOL III. By Rufus Wilmot Griswold. 1853. Signed by “Joshua L. Chamberlain” on front page. General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (born Lawrence Joshua Chamberlain, September 8, 1828 – February 24, 1914) was an American college professor and politician from Maine who volunteered during the American Civil War joining the Union Army. He became a highly respected and decorated Union officer, reaching the rank of brigadier general (and brevet major general).
