Description

This flag is one of 6-7 known to exist "Cassidy" pattern flags and was known to be used by Braxton Bragg’s 2nd Corps. It also is known as the 12 Star Southern Cross flag. The frame measures 72" x 52" and flag takes almost the entire frame. The flag is mounted on to a linen backing over plywood and the preservation entailed large hand stitching line patterns of matching color thread to secure into place and stabilize the section of weakness. The frame is stained wood with plexiglass front. Some experts have said it can stay like it is for now but would like to see the next level of preservation with the latest techniques. Included with the flag is the following that can be read in detail in our photos. 1) Three page letter from Howard M. Madaus of "Old Glory" Flag Consultants LLC. attesting this flag once belonged to CSA Quartermaster Major Lemuel G. Bridewell and was later studied in 1980-81 while in collector’s hands. The letters spells out the original ownership, the state of preservation and charts each part of the production and material with measurements. 2) Faxed copy of the CSA record of receipt of the this batch of flags in 1862. 3) 7 copies of the other known flags from this batch of flags with history, measurements, material and method of production. 4) Page from June 2006 Military Trader where it made news changing hands to current collector.

This flag was on display at the 2024 Autumn Civil War Show in Gettysburg Pa. and a number of collectors and experts were very familiar with this flag and are pleased it will be up for auction again. This is indeed one of those rare moments where one of the greatest of Civil War flags known to be in private hands is available. This is your chance. Look for the link on the main page of the Donley Auctions under "Special Items Coming Up" for link to all the letters and documents.
