Description

This is an excellent example of the 12 button M1858 cavalry shell jacket with much use. It is marked in right armpit with inked large “19” and “3”. The left armpit has manufacturer oval with New York maker and date of Nov. 3 1864 and ink stamped size “3”. All the buttons match and appear to have original stitching and are the plain thin neck eagle general service pattern. The lining is a woven cotton cream colored material and sleeve lining is white cotton material. The condition is very good with the yellow worsted piping showing general fading to a more cream yellow color. This jacket shows age and wear from use. The waist has been expanded by 1.5″ on both side with semi-matching material. The front edges and waist band edges show many repairs and seams in many places have been re-stitched. The back has an area with rectangle shaped old stitches. The blue wool body has no moth holes or tracks that we can see. There are various stains in some areas.. This is a classic hard used and field repaired shell jacket with character.
