Description

An exceptionally rare survivor from the dawn of recorded sound, this antique brown wax phonograph cylinder was manufactured by the London Phonograph Co. out of 3 Broad St. Buildings, London. The lot includes the early composition wax cylinder, its original protective sheet-metal storage canister lined with natural cotton cushioning, and the matching metal lid displaying a handwritten paper label identifying the selection as “Song / Yeomans Wedding / Sung by…” reflecting the late 19th or very early 20th-century acoustic recording era. Objectively, the metal container and lid exhibit authentic age-related patina, surface oxidation, and minor wear, while the paper label shows moderate darkening, staining, and edge chipping. The brown wax cylinder remains structurally stable without visible deep cracks or fractures, though it exhibits significant surface efflorescence, mold growth, and typical organic compounding degradation consistent with age. H 4.75″, W 2.75″, D 2.75″. Please see photos for condition. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection.
