Description
An exceptional survivor from the pioneer era of recorded sound, this original brown wax phonograph cylinder was manufactured by the Columbia Phonograph Co. of New York & Paris. Carrying catalog number 5614, the metallic-soap wax cylinder features a late-19th-century acoustic recording of the traditional bass solo “Down Deep Within the Cellar,” performed by early baritone J.W. Myers. The lot includes a highly unique, period-correct handwritten and typed paper identification slip detailing the song title, artist, manufacturer, and an 1898 date. The cylinder remains in stable condition, exhibiting an authentic aged surface patina with minor organic spotting, light surface grittiness, and faint handling marks, while the accompanying paper slip displays heavy toning and tattered edges.
