Hand-Carved Wooden Folk Art – Joaquin Murrieta, a legendary Mexican-born forty-niner and outlaw, viewed as a folk hero who stole from greedy miners to avenge injustices against his people, known as the “Robin Hood of El Dorado” during the California Gold Rush, the Texas Rangers severed his head and preserved it in a jar to display as proof throughout the mining towns, artist carved “VIT” in bottom, initials of a talented regional woodcarver that has deep roots in waterfowl decoy carving, the texture work on the clothing and boots strongly mimics the “feather texturing” techniques used by wildlife carvers to give wooden birds a realistic look before paint is applied, figurines have been in storage for 40 years, were going to be put on display at Donley’s Wild West Town, minor scuffs, good condition, 11″ x 6 1/2″
