Lot 2283:
Description
This impressive, heavy-duty double longspring trap—likely a size #4 or #4 1/2 designed for wolf or cougar—exhibits the rugged blacksmithing of the late 19th or early 20th century. The forged iron construction features a classic wide-pan design and distinctive hand-stamped “R.A.S.” initials on the jaw, a common practice for trappers to identify their gear in the field. The trap includes its original heavy-duty twist-link chain and large iron ring, essential for securing such a powerful piece. The item shows a deep, authentic oxidized patina throughout with pitting and surface rust consistent with heavy outdoor use and age; the springs remain intact, though the metal shows significant wear and weathering. H 8″, W 29″, D 13″. Please see photos.
