Description

This traditional Native American “porky” roach is an authentic piece of dance regalia, expertly constructed using genuine porcupine guard hair and dyed deer tail hair. The authenticity is confirmed by the hair’s characteristic hollow, brittle structure, which provides the iconic “shimmer” effect during tribal dance. The hair is hand-tied into a hand-woven cordage base of green and red. While the exact date is unknown, the construction is consistent with 20th-century craftsmanship; if the base cordage is a natural heavy cotton or early mercerized thread rather than synthetic, an early-to-mid 20th-century origin is highly plausible. Condition: The item is in fair to good vintage condition; the base is structurally sound, but there is notable hair loss at the base and terminal ends, and the fibers are quite brittle, typical of organic materials of this age. H 6″, W 3.5″, D 12″. Please see photos.
