Description

This masterwork of modern lithic art, represents a pinnacle of the 20th-century flintknapping revival. While the “Dovetail” or St. Charles typology is rooted in the Early Archaic period, the exceptional scale and the specific provenance markings indicate this is a contemporary presentation piece. The artisan demonstrated incredible control, utilizing percussion flaking to create broad, thinning scars and finishing the margins with meticulous pressure flaking to produce a crisp, serrated edge. Carved from a high-quality, monochromatic chert, the piece features a classic fan-shaped base and a symmetrical, lanceolate body that is rarely achieved in prehistoric examples of this size. The notation “Gift GJ 1991” on the reverse suggests it may be the work of a noted modern knapper from the late 20th century. Physically, the point is in mint condition with no discernible chips or impact fractures, maintaining sharp edges and a fine tip; the only “flaw” is the archival ink marking on the face. Included in this lot is the stone point and the black presentation box. H 7.75″, W 2.625″, D 0.25″. Please see photos for condition.
