Description

From the perspective of a historian of the Great Plains, this pouch is a stunning representative of Sioux material culture during the transition to the reservation era. Hand-crafted from brain-tanned leather, the bag serves as a canvas for intricate porcupine quillwork in traditional hues of madder red, deep violet, and sun-faded orange. The geometric “dragonfly” and “coup stick” motifs—carry deep spiritual and martial significance, often representing speed, protection, and the recorded bravery of the owner. Historically, such pouches were utilized for carrying personal medicine, tobacco, or striking flint. This specific example features a finely fringed aperture and a wrap-and-stitch technique that was increasingly supplemented by glass beads as trade routes expanded, though this piece remains predominantly quilled. Objectively, the item is in good antique condition for its age; the leather remains pliable though it shows significant surface soiling and darkening, while the quillwork exhibits minor loss and some color fading consistent with a late 19th-century origin.
