Description

This is a significant mid-19th-century American historical document, an 1854 Presidential Land Grant for 40 acres in Menasha, Wisconsin. Issued under the administration of President Franklin Pierce, the grant was originally intended for Elisha Barber, a Private in Captain Webster’s Company of the Connecticut Militia during the War of 1812, likely as a bounty for military service. However, as noted in the research provided on the exterior of the document, the land was ultimately assigned to Harvey Dean. The vellum-style paper features formal engraved typography and a discernible raised paper seal from the General Land Office. The document shows significant historical wear, including heavy creasing from being folded into eighths, minor localized staining, and edge fraying, but remains fully legible with strong ink contrast. The reverse, contains official recording marks from the Register’s Office in Columbia County, Wisconsin. H 9.75″, W 15.25″. See photos for condition. Please see photos for condition.
