Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2140:
Description
Issued from Topeka during the administration of Governor John W. Leedy, this official State of Kansas document authorizes the extradition of Sidney Saxton, who stood charged with “Burglary of a dwelling house in the night time” in Marshall County. The warrant identifies Saxton as a fugitive from justice who had fled to Nebraska and designates C. Johnson as the state’s agent to receive and return him. It features a prominent, original gold-tone embossed Great Seal of the State of Kansas, along with the signatures of the Secretary of State and Assistant Secretary of State. As a collector of 19th-century Americana, I find the specific legal language and the snapshot of frontier-era justice to be a significant addition to any Western history or legal collection. The paper shows substantial signs of age, including significant foxing and moisture staining primarily along the top edge and right side, with visible horizontal and vertical fold lines and minor edge wear. H 16.5″, W 11″. Please see photos for condition.
