Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2119:
Description
An intriguing collection of rustic metalware, showing a wonderful blend of early utility and classic forms. This six-piece lot includes an expansive oval platter, a shallow round plate, a hand-raised style bowl, a ribbed melon-form vase, a small hand-crank nutmeg or spice grater, and a small metal cup. The bottom of the cup shows distinct stampings reading “1881 Rogers”, “71 300”, and “EPNS”, indicating it is an electroplated nickel silver piece from the noted American manufacturer. The larger platters and bowls feature a heavy, hand-hammered copper base visible underneath, heavily tinned on the display sides—a traditional method for making utilitarian copper food-safe in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The ribbed vase displays a dark, aged patina over a similar heavy metal composition. Visually, the collection is in well-loved, antique condition, showing expected surface wear, scratches, significant tarnish, and various minor dents and shape distortions consistent with age and heavy domestic use. Large platter: H 1″, W 19″, D 9.75″. Small platter: H 1″, W 8.75″, D 8.75″. Bowl: H 4″, W 8″, D 8″. Vase: H 7″, W 6″, D 6″. Cup: H 2.5″, W 2.25″, D 2.25″. Grater: H 3″, W 4″, D 2″. Please see photos for condition.
