Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2092:
Description
This collection consists of four late 19th-century photographs identified as Jesse James, Frank James, Cole Younger, and Bob Ford. The items include one cabinet card, two tintypes (one cased), and one photographic print in a cardstock holder. All four pieces feature studio markings from Camillus “C.S.” Fly of Tombstone, Arizona Territory, including “Fly’s Gallery” labels and “Property of Camillus Fly” backstamps. While the studio marks and photographic mediums are period-accurate, the identification of the subjects as the James-Younger Gang is based on the inscriptions and studio stamps provided; collectors should perform their own historical research regarding the sitters’ identities. The Jesse James cabinet card shows light foxing and edge wear. The Frank James cased tintype is clear with minor perimeter oxidation and a worn and separated case cover. The Cole Younger tintype displays surface scratches and emulsion loss at the edges. The Bob Ford holder exhibits light soiling and tear on back of holder. Jesse James: H 6″, W 4.25″. Bob Ford: H 4″, W 2.5″. Cole Younger: H 3.375″, W 2.375″. Frank James (Case): H 3.75″, W 3.25″. Please see photos for condition.
