Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2053:
Description
This curated collection features a fascinating array of late 19th to early 20th-century militaria and utility items. Central to the lot is a professional-grade leather or heavy oilcloth “Grip” bag featuring a sophisticated brass locking frame manufactured by S.A. Diamond & Bro. of New York (marked with Patent No. 115218, circa 1915). Accompanying the bag is a robust brass document or map tube bearing a distinct “H.B.C.” monogram—historically associated with the Hudson’s Bay Company—and a maker’s mark for G.K.W. Mfg. Co. on the base. Completing the lot is a weathered steel scabbard, likely for a mid-19th-century drummer boy or cadet short sword, featuring dual hanging rings. The bag shows heavy wear including leather cracking, a frayed handle, and oxidation on the brass; the scabbard has significant surface rust and pitting; the brass tube shows several indentations and a deep, aged patina. H 16″, W 13″, D 4″ (Bag); H 13.5″, W 2″ (Scabbard); H 12.25″, W 2″ (Tube). Please see photos for condition.
