Phonograph Records And Books Auction - ONLINE ONLY
Lot 2045:
Description
This rare pair of original, early 20th-century ledger books serve as official stenographer notebooks detailing corporate railroad investigative hearings and employee statements from December 1907. Bound in classic three-quarter maroon faux leather with dark textured cloth boards, the handwritten pages feature a mix of elegant cursive and extensive period shorthand, capturing verbatim primary-source transcriptions of internal testimonies from prominent line personnel including Assistant Superintendent C.H. Priest, Train Dispatcher V.W. Lyons, Operator Louis J. Duffy, and Antonis Roy of St. Valier, Quebec. The journals provide a fascinating, highly detailed window into historical train dispatches and official operational records of the Maine Central Railroad (M.C.R.R.). One journal contains approximately 150 pages written on the front side only, and the other contains approximately 120 pages written on one side only. The notebooks display an objective physical condition consistent with age, including moderate rubbing, scuffing, and minor chipping to the corners and spine edges, alongside expected uniform yellowing of the interior leaves; however, the bindings remain structurally secure and the pencil and ink notations remain remarkably crisp, dark, and legible. H 10.25″, W 8.25″, D 1″. Please see photos for condition. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection.
