Description
This dramatic 19th-century Orientalist cabinet sculpture depicts a fallen Ottoman “Bashi-bazouk” or irregular soldier alongside his loyal horse, a scene masterfully echoing the Romantic era’s fascination with the Near East. The work is likely a French production, cast in a dark-patinated copper alloy—highly probable to be a spelter cast—which beautifully captures the intricate textures of the horse’s mane and the soldier’s traditional vest. The narrative depth on the base is exceptional, featuring a field cannon, a soldier’s pack, and a tasseled Ottoman standard topped with a crescent moon. Objectively, the piece is in fair antique condition; it maintains a rich, authentic patina and fine detail, but it suffers from a significant structural break at the base of the horse’s tail where it remains barely attached to the haunch. Light surface dust is present in the deeper recesses, and typical casting lines are visible on the horse’s body. H 6″, W 10″, D 5″. Please see photos for condition.
