Description

This is a high-quality, authentic German porcelain Reservistenkrug (reservist stein) commissioned to commemorate the military service of a soldier in the Großherzoglich Hessisches Leib-Garde-Regiment (Grand Ducal Hessian Life-Guard Regiment) stationed in Darmstadt, covering the period of 1899–1901. Standing 12 inches tall with a base diameter of 4.25 inches (and a 6-inch depth including the handle), this vessel features ornate, hand-painted regimental insignia and scenes, a detailed pewter lid with a figural soldier finial, and a stylized lion thumb lift. The porcelain is marked with a “0.5” capacity designation near the handle, confirming its traditional utility as a half-liter commemorative vessel. A hallmark of its superior craftsmanship is the highly detailed lithophane base, which reveals a classic scene of German social life when held to the light; please note that this base exhibits visible age-related hairline stress cracks, which are consistent with the delicate nature of the material. The exterior showcases the original, hand-lettered roster of the soldier’s comrades, a sought-after feature that adds significant historical provenance to the piece. Condition Note: Overall excellent antique condition, with light surface wear commensurate with age, and characteristic hairline stress cracks to the interior lithophane base. Please see photos.
