Description

This impressive cast iron newel post, with bronze patina embodies the fluid and ornate style of the Rococo period. Provenance supports that it came out of the Paradise Theater which was a 3,500 seat movie palace in Chicago located at 231 N. Crawford Ave. It was demolished in 1956. The cast iron features a prominent ram’s head at the top, surrounded by intricate scrolling acanthus leaves and classical motifs, all resting on a carved wooden base. The craftsmanship suggests it may be a late 19th or early 20th-century piece, a testament to the revival of classical and elaborate decorative arts during that time. The sculpture is in good physical condition with a pleasing, bronze patina and some minor surface wear and a few scattered nicks consistent with age. The measurements are 37 inches in height, 18 inches in width, and 8 inches in depth not including the wood base. From the Sanfilippo Place De La Musique collection.
