Description
This is a 19th-century muzzle loading target rifle which features a heavy octagonal barrel prominently stamped “REMINGTON” and “CAST STEEL” on each side of the barrel, denoting its premium material construction. Built with a side-hammer percussion mechanism, the firearm boasts premium, elaborate scroll engraving across the receiver, lock plates, hammer, and trigger guard, highlighted by a beautifully executed wildlife vignette depicting a lion attacking a deer on the left side of the receiver. The presentation-grade walnut buttstock displays elegant scroll work on the butt plate and a brass Masonic disc emblem recessed into the wood. Personalized scroll engraving on the upper tang reads “F.M.T.R.”, and a circular brass asset tag numbered “564” is located on the lower toe line. The barrel features an adjustable target front sight and a rear adjustable wedge sight. The rifle presents in highly attractive antique condition with crisp engravings, a warm, aged patina across the finish, smooth wood surfaces showing minor handling marks, and a dark, untouched finish on the heavy barrel. An early repair is visible on the wrist, with several brass screws mending the wood. Mechanically, the action and trigger are tight and appear to function properly.
