Description

This exceptional Meiji-period Japanese table mirror is a masterclass in the “Squirrel and Grape” motif, a theme symbolizing fertility and harvest. Likely originating from the carving centers of Nikko or Shizuoka, the frame features incredibly deep, three-dimensional relief carving into a dense hardwood with a rich, dark patina. The lifelike squirrels with inset eyes are nestled among undercut vines and grape clusters, accented by striking gilt-painted autumnal leaves. While similar in theme to European Black Forest works, the specific scrollwork and high-relief execution are hallmarks of late 19th-century Japanese craftsmanship. The item is in generally good condition; however, there is a visible crack and an older professional repair on the upper right portion of the frame, and further separation is visible where the bottom of the frame meets the side ends. The mirror glass displays light, age-appropriate silvering oxidation and surface dust. H 21.25″, W 19.0″, D 7.5″. Please see photos for condition.
