Description

Highly detailed folk art hearse by Marshall Fleming (see bio below). Made of hand carved wood, wood, metal, and leather, and paint. Fleming took great pride in the details of his work as evident here. The carved wood horses have metal horse shoes, the hearse has working elliptical springs, and the brake works. Mounted on a wood base with a custom plate glass cover . There is a crudely made metal tag affixed to the base hand etched, “Built by Marshall Fleming Antioch W. Va. Measures 33″ wide, 11″ deep, 17” tall.
Marshall B. Fleming (1916–1998) was a self-taught woodcarver and folk artist from New Creek and Antioch,, West Virginia, known for his intricate mixed-media sculptures and hand-carved wood figures. His work often focused on capturing memories of his life, including horse-drawn wagons, farming machinery, and circus scenes. Due to the sheer volume of his work, his wife eventually “raised thunder,” leading him to build a small barn near his home to act as a museum for his creations. Marshall Fleming’s work is represented in major institutions including the Smithsonian Art Museum.
