Description

The Cail-O-Phone is an early coin-operated cylinder phonograph produced by the Caille Brothers Company of Detroit, Michigan, around the turn of the 20th century.
It was designed as a coin-in-slot machine for use in arcades and public venues, serving as a primitive precursor to the modern jukebox. It plays a single wax cylinder which was the technology of the day and is powered by an early electric motor. drop a penny in the slot and it plays one tune and resets itself. The phonograph mechanism is all original with a nice Cail-O-Phone decal on the front of the bedplate. The quarter sawn paneled oak case has the original finish. An oak framed beveled glass “bay window” covers the phonograph mechanism and allows people to watch the mechanism as it plays. The lower case has a single locking front door which conceals the original electric motor and cast iron cash box vault. The vault has original lock & key and tin cash box inside. The cabinet stands on nickel plated legs. A reproduction marquee with hand painted show card for John Philip Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever. Measures 45.5″ tall, 23″ wide, 17″ deep. Add 26″ to height for marquee. From the Sanfilippo Place De La Musique collection.
