Description

As a dedicated historian of early recorded sound, finding documentation relating to Thomas Edison’s seminal 1877/1878 invention is always thrilling. Pictured here is an early photographic print depicting the “Original Model of the Edison Phonograph” as filed at the U.S. Patent Office. The piece features a detailed textual history of the patent process alongside a photo of the original tinfoil phonograph speaking machine model, bearing a tag dated February 19, 1878. The reverse side displays vintage handwritten archival or negative numbers including “#6308”, “48692”, and a reference date of “1878-02-19″. Accompanying this original print is a photocopy of the document. This paper document is in fragile, fair condition, exhibiting significant wear, heavy creasing, edge tears, chips to the corners, and a major horizontal tear extending inward from the right margin. H 10″, W 8.25″, D 0”. Please see photos for condition. From the Allan Koenigsberg collection.
