Description

An exceptionally rare and beautifully preserved piece of turn-of-the-century Americana, this tabletop country store counter display was produced by the Acme White Lead and Color Works of Detroit, Michigan, for their “New Era High Grade Prepared Paint.” Housed in its original dark-painted wooden cabinet, the display functions via a hand-crank mechanism on the side that rotates an internal roll showcasing various architectural color combinations for Victorian-era homes. The front glass window, measuring 14.5″ across by 11.75″ tall, beautifully frames “Color Plate No. 19,” depicting an intricate Queen Anne residence with designated sections detailing matching roof, body, and trimmer colors. A metal lithographed label on the left side proudly boasts that the paint “Withstands Rain and Shine,” while paper labels reading “Colors for Your House” border the viewing window. Included with the unit is a small bagged replacement paper label fragment. The piece is in very good antique condition, showing expected surface wear, minor paint loss, scratches, and light chips to the wooden frame, along with mild toning to the internal color plates. The wooden turning handles are later replacements but are fully functional, smoothly operating the internal roll, which is assumed to contain approximately 18 color plates. H 15″, W 18.25″, D 5.25″. Please see photos for condition. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection.
