The Allen Koenigsberg Phonograph Collection
Lot 3292:
Description
This exceptional lot features an original, highly scarce antique wooden record storage box alongside a 5.5-inch single-sided shellac record manufactured by the Little Wonder Record Company, dating to circa 1914–1919. While Little Wonder discs themselves are a wonderful piece of early acoustic recording history, finding an intact, dedicated multi-slot wooden cabinet specifically designed for these diminutive records is an extraordinary rarity for the mechanical music collector. The beautifully crafted quarter-sawn oak or stained hardwood box features exquisite pressed/embossed Art Nouveau style relief carvings on the front, depicting two figures playing horns alongside musical scrolls and a stylized Gothic “Records” script on the lid. Inside, the box includes integrated slotted wooden tracks designed to hold up to 15 small-format records. The included record is Little Wonder No. 233, titled “College One-Step,” performed by a studio band, with the classic stamped patent dates on the back ending in 1909. Physically, the wooden box shows minor surface wear, light scuffs, and expected aging to the finish, and the lid rests freely on top with no hinge present. The shellac record exhibits light surface scratches and superficial scuffs consistent with age, but no visible cracks. H 5.75″, W 5″, D 6.25″ Please see photos for condition.
