The Allen Koenigsberg Phonograph Collection
Lot 3286:
Description
The Siam Soo phonograph doll was manufactured by Morton E. Converse & Son Co., Winchendon, Mass. around 1910 – 1925. They were sold exclusively through Columbia phonograph dealers. Designed as an accessory for disc phonographs, the doll, made of carved, jointed, and painted wood with a fabric skirt, rests on a specialized stand next to the turntable. A small, rubber drive wheel rests directly on the spinning edge of the record or turntable platter, using that rotational mechanical force to activate a complex internal pulley system. This mechanism causes the doll to dance dynamically—moving her head, shaking her shoulders, and lifting her hands. In overall good condition with original paint and clothing, the doll needs a good cleaning. Her hands/forearms have become disconnected due to fragile thread but they are both present and in good condition. She measures about 12” tall. Comes with the original cardboard box and excelsior packing material. Also included is a 1921 copy of Siam Soo sheet music in good condition, and a small paper label from a Siam Soo doll.
