The Allen Koenigsberg Phonograph Collection
Lot 3222:
Description
The Zon-O-Phone Grand Opera is one of the most luxurious outside-horn disc phonographs of the early acoustic era. Originally introduced around 1901 by the Universal Talking Machine Company, it represented the absolute top-of-the-line premium model for the brand. This machine is from the later rear-mount era circa 1905–1906 following Victor’s quiet acquisition of the brand when the design shifted to a rear-mount configuration utilizing a tapering tone arm assembly. This multi-tiered original finish oak cabinet is detailed with beautifully turned wood corner pillars and the signature “Grand Opera” decal on the front. It is worth removing the turntable just to see the highly detailed nickel plated bed plate. Pinstripe and paint on the back mount is VG. Plating on the crank, tone arm, and brake is passable. Reproducer is intact and could use a good cleaning. Machine winds and runs well. The all brass horn is in VG condition with just a few small dings. Machine measures 15.75” wide, 13” deep, 13” tall to the top of the back mount. Horn measures 18” long with a 13.5” diameter bell. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection.
