The Allen Koenigsberg Phonograph Collection
Lot 3147:
Description
The Columbia Type AQ “Trivet” Graphophone was introduced by the Columbia Phonograph Company in 1904 for just $5. Today, it is highly sought after by collectors due to its short production run and distinct aesthetic. It is an open-work, “trivet” shaped key-wind machine. Unlike its predecessor (the Type AP), the AQ includes a crude, integral feed screw built directly into the horn and reproducer housing to guide the needle smoothly across the 2 minute wax cylinders. The AQ is highly uncommon because it was never featured in regular the Columbia catalogs and was sold mainly through mail order catalog companies such as Sears and Montgomery Wards. This is a complete original machine in good condition. Cast iron base has some pinstripe and a 90& decal. Original aluminum winding key. Machine winds and motor runs but it needs a new belt. The mandrel spins freely. Good reproducer. Original horn retains 90+% original paint and gold stripe. Needs a good cleaning. Measures 13” long with horn, 7” wide, 8.5” to top of horn. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection.
