Lot 3126:
Description
This exceptional early 20th-century framed lithograph portrait depicts “The March King,” John Philip Sousa, in his decorated military-style bandmaster uniform with medals proudly displayed. The piece features an embossed ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) seal in the lower right corner, alongside a printed facsimile signature from the legendary composer and a faint artist signature or notation just above it in the lower left quadrant. Turning the piece over reveals a spectacular vintage mailing label filled out to “J.P. Sousa” in Port Washington, Long Island, adding an incredible layer of provenance directly linking it to his New York estate. The lithograph is housed in an ornate, period-correct gilded composition wood frame. Structurally, the print shows honest age-toning and moderate foxing/spotting throughout the paper surface, while the vintage frame retains its original backing wire with minor finish wear, dust, and tiny chips consistent with its age.H 15.25″, W 12.25″, D 0.75″.
