Description

As an avid collector of historical ephemera and early technology pieces, I find this two-piece lot featuring Thomas Alva Edison and his groundbreaking phonograph particularly compelling. The first piece is a highly desirable, authentic, 19th-century wood engraving removed from The Illustrated London News, dated July 21, 1888, showcasing “Mr. Edison Speaking Through The Perfected Phonograph In America” with a detailed advertising page on the reverse side. The second piece is a French publication print titled L’Exposition de Paris, featuring a handsome portrait engraving of Edison captioned “M. Thomas E. Edison, Inventeur du Phonographe,” which is a modern 1976 reproduction by J.-P. Agnard. Both items are printed on paper, with the 1888 engraving capturing the incredible detail typical of Victorian-era periodical illustrations, making them excellent display pieces for any history or science enthusiast. The 1888 London News print is in very good antique condition with minor edge yellowing, while the 1976 French reproduction exhibits heavy foxing, staining, wrinkling, and a notable tear on the left margin.
