Description

This is a remarkably well-preserved example of a Swiss Model 1878/81 Vetterli rimfire repeating rifle chambered in 10.4x38mm with a 27-inch barrel. Manufactured by Soc. Ind. Suisse (SIG Neuhausen) under the Syst. Vetterli patent, this piece features the iconic bolt-action design with a side-loading gate for its tubular magazine. The receiver is clearly stamped with the Swiss cross and serial number 88734, which is matching on the barrel and floor plate. It retains an original Vetterli wood stock, which has been sporterized and modeled after the 1869/71 stock. The metal surfaces show a consistent, honest patina with some thinning of the original finish and scattered surface oxidation typical of its 19th-century military service. The wood shows expected handling marks, small indentations, and light scuffs, but remains structurally sound with no visible cracks. Bore is good, with some very light freckling, and the rifling is rounded. Mechanically, the action and trigger are tight and appear to function properly. For its age, the rifle is in overall good condition. The rifle comes with a hard plastic case. Please see photos for overall condition. S/N:88734. Classified Antique.
